GPX viewer

Open a walk recorded by your phone, watch or a route planner. See the route line, how far and how high you went, your moving time and a split for every kilometre or mile.

Drop a .gpx file here

The file is read on your device. Nothing is uploaded, and no map tiles are loaded.

How to use it

Export the walk as GPX from your app (most have a share or export option), then drop the file above or choose it. Tracks, track segments, planned routes and waypoints are all read. Switch between km and miles for the splits.

How this is worked out

Distance adds up the great-circle (haversine) distance between points on a sphere of the Earth's mean radius, 6,371 km; gaps between track segments are not counted. Elevations are averaged with their two neighbours on each side, then a climb or descent only counts once it adds up to 2 metres, so GPS jitter does not invent hills. Moving time leaves out stretches slower than about 1.4 km/h. All figures are estimates from your device's recording.

Questions

Why is the climb lower than my app says?

Apps smooth elevation in different ways, and some add up every small wobble in the GPS height. This viewer smooths lightly and ignores changes under 2 metres, which keeps GPS noise out of the total but can also miss very small real rises.

Why is there no map behind the route?

Map tiles would have to be fetched from a map server, which would reveal where you walked. The route is drawn from your file alone, with a scale bar and a north arrow.

What if my file has no times or heights?

Planned routes often have neither. You still get the route and distance; the time, pace and climb figures are left blank instead of guessed.
