City on Foot Walking pace

Walking pace calculator

Minutes per kilometre, minutes per mile, km/h and mph are four ways of saying the same thing. Enter one, or a distance and a time, and see the rest, with finish times for longer walks.

How to use it

Type a pace such as 12:30 and pick min/km or min/mile, or type a speed and pick km/h or mph. To work out the pace of a walk you have done, choose A distance and time. The chips fill in some typical walking speeds.

How this is worked out

Pace and speed are reciprocals: minutes per kilometre = 60 ÷ km/h. A mile is exactly 1.609344 km (the international mile of 1959). The half marathon (21.0975 km) and marathon (42.195 km) are World Athletics distances. Pace bands are the level-walking speed bands of the 2024 Adult Compendium of Physical Activities. Finish times assume one steady pace all the way, so treat them as estimates.

Questions

What is a good walking pace?

The Compendium of Physical Activities calls 2.8 to 3.4 mph (4.5 to 5.5 km/h) a moderate pace and 3.5 to 3.9 mph (5.6 to 6.3 km/h) brisk. A comfortable pace you can keep up while talking is a good place to start.

How long does it take to walk a half marathon?

At 6 km/h (10:00 per km) about 3 hours 31 minutes; at 5 km/h about 4 hours 13 minutes. Enter your own pace to see your time, then add a few minutes for drink stations and crowds at the start.

How do I turn minutes per km into minutes per mile?

Multiply by 1.609344. A pace of 12:00 per km is 19:19 per mile; 10:00 per km is 16:06 per mile. Going the other way, divide by 1.609344.

Why is my app's average pace different?

Apps often use moving time, which leaves out stops, while a stopwatch counts everything. GPS also wanders in cities with tall buildings, which can stretch or shrink the distance.
