City on Foot Steps to km
Steps to km
How far did those steps take you? Turn a step count into kilometres or miles, or find how many steps a walk will be, from your height or your own step length.
Measure your own step length
For a better answer than any formula, walk 20 ordinary steps on a pavement, measure the distance from where you started to the same heel at the end, and divide by 20. Choose My own step length and enter it.
How this is worked out
Distance is steps × step length. Without a measurement, the step length comes from a widely used pedometer rule of thumb: about 41.3% of height for women and 41.5% for men (41.4% if you would rather not say). It is an average, so treat the answer as an estimate. Your own steps get shorter on hills, stairs and busy pavements.
Questions
How many steps are there in a kilometre or a mile?
By the height rule, about 1,300 to 1,600 steps per kilometre and 2,000 to 2,600 per mile for adults between 150 and 190 cm tall. Taller people take fewer, longer steps.
How far is 10,000 steps?
About 7 km (4.4 miles) for someone 170 cm tall, around 6.2 km at 150 cm and 7.9 km at 190 cm. At an average walking pace that is roughly an hour and a half on your feet.
Why does my phone show a different distance?
Phones and watches estimate step length too, often from your height or from GPS, and step counters can miss or add steps. A measured step length entered here usually gets closest.
Is stride length the same as step length?
In pedometer settings, stride length usually means one step, from one heel to the other. Strictly, a stride is two steps. This page always uses one step.
