How this is worked out

The times come from the NOAA solar position algorithm (the method behind the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's solar calculator, based on Jean Meeus's Astronomical Algorithms), run on your device. Sunrise and sunset are when the sun's centre is 0.833° below a flat, sea-level horizon, which allows for refraction and the sun's size. Civil twilight runs to 6° below; golden hour here is the sun between the horizon and 6° up. Hills, buildings and altitude can shift what you see by several minutes, so treat the times as estimates.

City times use your browser's built-in time zone rules, including summer time. Near the poles you will see midnight sun, polar night or white nights.

Questions

How accurate are these times?

The method is good to about a minute away from the poles; checked against the US Naval Observatory, these times agree to within a minute. Local hills, buildings and unusual weather matter more.

What is golden hour?

The soft, warm light just after sunrise and before sunset. Definitions vary; this page uses the time the sun is less than 6° above the horizon.

Is my location used?

No. The page never asks for your location; it only uses the city or coordinates you choose, and nothing is sent anywhere.
